Fashion Revolution Day
Today is Fashion Revolution Day, a day to honor the lives and hopes and dreams of the people, all over the world, who make the goods we wear. We believe in connecting with the talented folks who create our goods. The better we know each other, the more we care for and value each other and become a strong community. We can choose quality over quantity, and respect for artisan communities and the planet.
Many of us have had the experience of walking into a big, fast fashion, store and seeing the racks and racks of beautiful, and amazingly cheap clothing. We have all become so accustomed to buying, buying, buying, things we don't need, things we won't wear, things that won't last, but that feel good when you leave the store with bags of new things. It is almost as if we'd rather not know what the conditions were in the places these things were made. How on earth is it possible for us to buy a shirt that costs only $8? Tragedies like the Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh remind us that every time we buy something, we set off a ripple effect, and that ripple can create opportunities and empower communities, or it can exploit people and the environment.
When we started Teysha two years ago, we wanted to bring another way to express yourself through fashion- a way to be unique and unlike everyone else, a way to get to learn and explore new cultures, a way to know exactly what your purchase was causing to happen, and a way to share beauty and empowerment with the world. We know we are still at the very beginning of this journey, and are thrilled to have our allies all around-- our artisan partners, like minded social businesses, and leaders who have been working in this conscious manner for years and years.
It is time to look deeply, to question, to act and to wear goods that reflect our values and who we want to become. The Revolution is upon us!
